COMPOSER SPOTLIGHT: SALVADOR ALAN JACOBO, "FANFARE FOR EARTHREALM" (2019)

On Tuesday, October 15th, MCI composer Salvador Alan Jacobo's "Fanfare for Earthrealm" will receive its world premiere by the Dallas Winds! Jacobo was one of seven chosen winners for this year's Dallas Winds Brass Fanfare Competition. From their website:

"In 2000 the Dallas Winds established a tradition of performing brass fanfares 15 minutes prior to curtain in the lobby of the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas, for each of its subscription concerts. Our patrons eagerly gather in the lobby to hear these fanfares that have become an important part of the whole concert-going experience."

We had the opportunity to speak with the composer about his new fanfare. Read on to learn more about what inspired him to create this piece:

"My initial inspiration for composing "Fanfare for Earthrealm" came from my huge interest in the Mortal
Kombat video game franchise. I've always wanted to write a serious piece inspired by the video game, and this fanfare presented an opportunity to do so. When writing this piece, I had to continuously think about the performance venue. The Meyerson Symphony Center lobby is a huge shell of marble and other reverberant surfaces, and so I couldn't just write something TOO bombastic; otherwise, it would just sound like a garbled mess.

One thing that I hope the audience ultimately takes away from hearing this work is that video games serve more than just entertainment. Yes, video games are fun, especially games like Mortal Kombat, but when used in a creative context, video games can serve as a world of inspiration for art."
