GABRIELLE LIRIANO
GABRIELLE LIRIANO (b. 1995) is a contemporary classical Dominican American composer from the NYC Metro Area as well as a songwriter, bassoonist, and teacher. Her compositions move the classical tradition forward as they delve into polyrhythms, theatrics, indeterminacy, and aleatory. Her music defies expectation as it toils over the adventurous sonorities of the early 20th century and collages them with Afro-Caribbean folk music and modern syncopations resulting in a fresh and culturally collaborative 21st Century sound. Her pieces are programmatic in nature and are filled with lyrical and modal melodies drawn from Gabrielle's background as a vocalist. Her music is on a journey, evolving as she explores incorporating sounds and rhythms from her heritage into her pieces. Her music is transient and in a constant state of motion. The notes she places on the page are just a snapshot of the continuum of sound dancing through her mind.
Her pieces have been performed at the University of Pennsylvania, at Berklee College of Music, Montclair State University and more.
Some of her previous compositional work includes:
-The MSU Symphony Orchestra performed "Roots" for full orchestra at the Alexander Kasser Theater in 2021.
-Professional bassoonists performed "Chasing Horizon" for bassoon quartet at the 2021 Virtual Meg Quigley Bassoon Symposium.
-Penn Flutes performed "Follow the Omens" at the Bodek Lounge at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 2018.
-The Berklee Symphonic Winds performed "What it Means to Rise" at the Berklee Performance Center in 2018.
