CADU VERDAN
CADU VERDAN is a composer inspired by feelings or events that are part of the human experience. He is interested in the use of texture and timbre to express his musical ideas.
Verdan was selected to the Fresh Inc Festival 2020 with a scholarship and a commission made possible by the Steven R. Gerber Trust covering full cost of the tuition. The string trio “Monomania” written for the Festival was premiered online during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In Brazil, he was awarded twice with the Classical Music Award of the National Foundation of Arts (FUNARTE), the most important composition prize in the country, with his work "O peso do Eco" (2014) and “Sobre a angústia” (2016), performed respectively at the XXI (2015) and XXII Biennale of Contemporary Music (2017). He was finalist at the Festival Tinta Fresca 2015, with “Alucinações cadavéricas”, for symphony orchestra, performed by the Filarmônica de Minas Gerais.
Verdan participated in the Rhymes With Opera’s Pocket Opera Workshop 2020 under composers George Lam and Ruby Fulton, and worked with baritone Robert Maril in a small experimental piece for Verdan’s future opera Berenice, a short opera in progress based on Edgar Allan Poe’s story with the libretto by Gabriel Gudding, an American poet, essayist, and translator.
Carlos Eduardo Verdam Maria, born in 1989 in Duque de Caxias, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A graduate of Illinois State University (M.M.) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (B.M.), he currently lives in London, Ontario, where he is pursuing a PhD in Music Composition at the University of Western Ontario.
